BLOGGING: It's Tuesday, Where Are You?
I expect my reading will slow down a bit once the Olympics start. I love watching the Olympics and my little sports nut of a son is looking forward to gluing himself to the television with me. We will get to watch Canadian and American coverage, and they can be quite different perspectives. We have two athletes from little old PEI representing Canada at the summer Olympics so that is quite exciting. I like the sports competitions and the little vignettes about the athletes and the ones that focus on the host country. CBC covers the Olympics very well and I am glad they are the main channel. I should look for a book set in China, like Snow Flower and Secret Fan that I've been meaning to read, to read during the Olympics, to get in the mood.
I have just stepped back in time, to the early 20th century on the south shore of Nova Scotia, where I am becoming an apprentice to a midwife in The Birth House. Every now and then, for a little diversion, I dip into Bailey White's decidedly southern life, living with her Mama, in a book of humorous essays called Mama Makes Up Her Mind.
Where is reading taking you today?
I'm the first!
ReplyDeleteI'm still in Atlanta, I will sort myself out and get Gone With The Wind finished soon.
I'm also in Nelson Bay, Australia clearing through my dead mother's belongings (Tomaree)
I'm in New Orleans watching Ignatius Reilly wildly go from one disaster to the next, and of course none of it is his doing. Blame it on the 20th century...it lacks taste and decency, not to mention geometry and theology.
ReplyDelete"A Confederacy Of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole.
katrina - It will feel so good to be finshed GWTW. It seems like you've been reading that one for ages, and frankly my dear,...
ReplyDeletebybee - Oh! Ignatius Reilly, what a character. So funny. It reminded me of a Seinfeld episode, and Reilly is a combo of Kramer and George together, *shudder*.
I am in France in two different eras.
ReplyDeleteFirstly I am in Paris during the late 1800's spending time with Auguste Renoir as he tries to paint the famous Luncheon of the Boating Party (Luncheon of the Boating Party by Susan Vreeland).
I am also in France during the mid 1600's living a very adventurous life. At the moment I am madly in love with my husband Joffrey after a very rocky start (Angelique by Sergeanne Golon).
I posted I my response on my blog. I hope that's okay!
ReplyDeleteI am in Africa with the Poisenwood Bible and a non-fiction work titled Too Small to Ignore
ReplyDeleteThe 8yo and I are stuck on an Island with Abel the mouse. (Abel's Island by William Steig)
ReplyDeleteI am in a fantasy land that two Asutralian kids have been sucked into and are trying to destroy the Ragwitch (Ragwitch by Garth Nix)
Plus, I am also travelling all over the US in a converted bus and don't remember what state we were in when I fell asleep last night. Oh, yes, I do remember, whatever state Mt. Rushmore is in. That's where we are but we went to see the Crazy Horse monument instead of the Presidents.
I'm in Boston (mostly at Metropolitan Hospital) where I work as a pathologist. I'm trying to find out what the connection is between two young women who have died. I'm also dealing with being considered to take over as the head of my department at the hospital at the same time that my jerk of a husband is pressuring me to stay home and have babies.
ReplyDeleteSide Effects by Michael Palmer
marg - bonjour! I'm interested in the Vreeland book. I'm reading Les Mis a bit on dailylit, so I'm viva la France as well.
ReplyDeletewendycat - that's perfectly fine, I'll be over later to visit you there.
juliann in wa - I loved the palindromes in that book. And welcome!
nicola - I've seen Nix carried around in high school classrooms, but I haven't read any yet, but fantasy isn't my fav.
suziq - I haven't read a lot of medical mysteries, but that one sounds good, esp the jerk husband. I hope he gets his by the end.
Oh....Snow Flower is an excellent book!! You really should read it.
ReplyDeleteRight now, I have left the Cornish Coast (since I finished du Maurier's Jamaica Inn), but I'm still on the Appalacian Trail with Bryson. And I'm also in Hollywood with Delaune Michel's The Safety of Secrets. Good books!
I'm in a London townhouse, specifically in the bed of a handsome Bow Street Runner after being rescued from my attempted murder and drowning in the Thames river. "Someone To Watch Over Me" by Lisa Kleypas.
ReplyDeleteToday, I am hanging out with a cheerleader at a high school located in Washington state! (All's Fair in Love, and War, and High School by Janette Rallison)
ReplyDeleteI'm in India with poor Juli who is about to marry some old geezer (almost 40! Oh noz!): The Far Pavilions. I'm also taking jaunts to FarWorld.
ReplyDeleteI'm having a hard time reading. I don't know what it is :(
Post my reply here http://confuzzledbooks.blogspot.com/2008/07/where-are-you.html
ReplyDeleteSnow Flower is a great one to get into the mood! I'm in London right now with a very vain and opulent Dorian Gray.
ReplyDeleteI love this! Isn't amazing the places a book can take us?
ReplyDeleteI'm in Mali, West Africa.

I think you're the second person today I've heard mention this Bailey White. I think this might be a sign I need to find her books.
ReplyDeleteSo Prince Edward Island is represented in the summer Olympics? Who knew? ;)
Here is where I be this Tuesday, one place I've been stuck and another place to which I'm heading.
I am romping in the 100 Acre Wood with Winnie-the-Pooh and Christopher Robin. This is for the Daring Girl Challenge at A Novel Challenge. Judy
ReplyDeleteYou are spot-on! I never thought of Ignatius as a combo of Kramer and George, but you're so ...brilliant!
ReplyDeleteToday is Wednesday, so where was I yesterday? I was in West Ridge, Maine jogging with Dana and Russ as they try to fight their attraction to one other... ok, sort of. (Moment to Moment by Barbara Delinsky)
ReplyDeleteI spent the weekend in Manhattan with Jane as her life fell apart and she slowly put it back together again. (The Book of Jane by Anne Dayton and May Vanderbilt).
Diane
stephanie - I haven't read duMaurier before, but between your great reviews and Chris's love of her, I plan to in the fall.
ReplyDeletemarcia - that sounds like a good book. I am often partial to London books. I'll have to go one day.
suey - arg, high school. Great title.
chris - it's the Humidity!! this has been the hottest summer I remember for a long time.
confuzzled books - I'll come by and visit.
trish - Dorian Gray is a better idea than the execution of the actual book. Too much blah, blah, blah for me.
ReplyDeleteshana - I hadn't heard of Monique and the Mango Rains. It sounds like a great book for the African reading challenge.
justareadingfool - White writes southern books. I'm reading essays right now, but Quite a Year for Plums was really cute. I read it last year.
judy - Oh, Winnie the Pooh. I'm feeling a little rumbly in my tummy.
bybee - aw, shucks. I do what I can.
diane - two more books I haven't heard of. The first one sounds kinda steamy.
Ooh! Mama Makes Up Her Mind is always my first recommendation when someone asks for a humorous read. I laughed aloud on a cross-country flight reading that one. I'm sure my seatmates were just delighted...
ReplyDeleteI have just enrolled with four other students at the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened, set on a rocky island just off the coast of Stonetown.
