BLOGGING: It's Tuesday, where are you?




Neil Gaiman just won the Newbery Award Medal for his children's book, The Graveyard Book. I haven't read that one yet, but I may get it for my kids. It's nice to see an award given to a book that isn't all 'literature' or that parents think children should read and like. I remember reading Jacob Have I Loved as a teenager, probably given to me because it was a Newbery Winner, and I thought it was pretty boring. My kids have quite enjoyed some of the recent Newbery's like Holes, The Tale of Despereaux, Maniac Magee and The Giver. Do you have a favorite Newbery?

I am on a meadow in Ireland, with a flock of sheep trying to solve the mystery of the murder of our shepherd. A sheep who left the flock has just returned, adding to the mystery. (Three Bags Full, Leonie Swann.)

    I put a hold on The Graveyard Book yesterday as soon as I heard. I have not liked the last two winners but something :-) tells me this one will be a winner for me.

    Where am I? I am in Toronto with Farley Mowat living on a boat with my father and mother in his memoir of his early years "Otherwise".

    I am also in Oslo, Norway working on a couple of crimes with Harry Hole in "Nemesis" by Jo Nesbo.

    My 8yo and I are adventuring in Whangdoodle Land in Julie Andrews Edwards "The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles".

    I would have to say my favorite Newbery Award winner is a toss up between The Tale of Despereaux and The Giver. They such different stories it hard to choose.

    My favorite is probably The Graveyard Book, but I loved Bridge to Terabithia, A Wrinkle in Time, Holes, Kira-Kira...actually most of the ones I've read. But I really haven't read that big a percentage of them.

    I'm anxious to see what you think of Three Bags Full. My husband and I were both tempted to pick that one up last time we were at the book store, but ultimately didn't.

    LoL...well, I'm in my forties, and I SOO can't wait to read "The Graveyard Book"; 'Course I have luved everything I've read by him, so...

    Today, tho, I'm in 1890's NYC, getting to know Edith Wharton's Lily Bard in "House of Mirth"

    I'm in Seattle. I came here to do a simple job of transporting a fugitive from Seattle. It's turned into quite a mystery involving the now missing and possibly kidnapped fugitive, rare books from a small publishing company that may or may not exist, and a possible old mystery about the fire that destroyed that publishing company and the two brothers who owned it so many years ago.

    I already had The Graveyard Book on hold so I hoping to get to it seen. I was reading Three Bags Full a few weeks ago, but had to return it to the library unfinished. It is on request so that I can finish it eventually.

    Today I am in Italy. I am the young daughter of the local alchemist, and I am about to give birth to one of the most famous men in history (Signora da Vinci by Robin Maxwell).

    I am back in high school in the early 90s where I am a wallflower. (Hm. Pretty much describes both me AND the book.) The Perks of Being a Wallflower by someone whose last name is hard to spell and harder to remember.

    I have to many favorite Newberys! A Single Shard comes to mind right off, but do like them all.

    As for where I am in the world, I'm hoping to go to Inkworld really, really soon, but at this point I'm still in Aunt Elinor's house, where ever that is.(Inkdeath by Cornelia Funke.)

    I just ordered The Graveyard Book for my middle school library!! My favorite Newbery is Tale of Despereaux but I adored Princess Academy too!! (even though it was an Honor book)

    Favorite Newberys: The Giver, Tale of Despereaux, Princess Academy (honor book), Bridge to Teribithia, Holes, and Crispin: Cross of Lead.
