Weekly Geeks hosted by Dewey is beginning an ambitious project of listing, and then voting on, blogger's favorite books published in 2008. To begin this, we are all listing our favorite books this year. It seems a little early, but to get the voting done on time, we have to start now. And everyone loves a list, right? I have a couple more books that might make the list before the year is out, but I have read a few excellent books published this year, so I can begin:
in no particular order (this statement appears to be a lie - they are in order of favorites), my best reads:
Before Green Gables by Budge Wilson
The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway
Remember Me? by Sophie Kinsella
Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith
Gods Behaving Badly by Marie Phillips (Dec 2007)
When Will There Be Good News? by Kate Atkinson
The Suspicions of Mr Whicher by Kate Summerscale
Mudbound by Hillary Jordan
The Outcast by Sadie Jones
Too Close to Home by Linwood Barclay
a couple other that I would like to mention as good reads, before the final list is made:
Exit Lines by Joan Barfoot
The Ravine by Paul Quarrington
A Case of Exploding Mangoes by Mohammed Hanif
A Fraction of the Whole by Steve Toltz
Will the following make the list? I hope to read before the year is out....
People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks
The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson

I am somewhat shocked to realize that I haven't read one book published this year yet! Usually I read one or two...so I am in awe of your list! Wow.
ReplyDeleteOh, dear. Another list that is bound to get me in trouble.
ReplyDeleteThe Cellist of Sarajevo would make my top list for 2008 list too.
ReplyDeleteJill =)
I've read Child 44 and it is in my top 5. I've also read the Mr Whicher book but it fell under just ok for me.
ReplyDeleteOh I forgot about Gods Behaving Badly, that was such a fun book! I've recommended that one to all my book buddies looking for a good original read.
ReplyDeleteYou are the only person I've seen post anything about Before Green Gables. I think my expectations were to high to give it a fair rating. It's one of those books that I will appreciate more over time.
ReplyDeleteGods Behaving Badly was one of the only books I didn't finish this year. Was the second half better?
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading Cellist of Sarajevo!
ReplyDeleteI have some of those books on your list here to read, so hopefully I will enjoy them as well!
ReplyDeleteGods Behaving Badly - fer shure.
ReplyDeleteThe Ravine - gosh, bias alert - I made the shrot film based on that one - movingstoriefilmfest.com hosts the trailer, so yup indeed.
The Gargoyle -- whoopsie, another film - its on YouTube at the moment -- but even bias aside, that's an amazing read.
Cellist of Sarajevo - I have not read the book yet, but I hung out with the author at Thin Air last week - a charming fella indeed.
Since we have so much in common, I'll pitch you top fave of mine - At a Loss for Words, Diane Schoemperlen - the companion novel to The Ravine, definately.
I have Remember Me and Mudbound on mine, too! I was going to do Gods B. B., too, but ran out of room. Maybe I'll tack it on.
