MEME: Booking Through Thursday: 5 For Favorites

1. Do you have a favorite author? There are a few, but Maeve Binchy is one of my favorite.

2. Have you read everything he or she has written? I think so. There are a few short stories maybe, and I have her newest book, Heart and Soul here, ready and waiting to read. I've been saving it, and looking forward to it. I think I'll need a weekend, to be able to read without stopping.

3. Did you LIKE everything? Overall, yes. Some of her early novels weren't as strong, but still great story telling and characters.

4. How about a least favorite author?
This is like that Kit Kat commercial - How do you know you are taking a break if you weren't doing anything in the first place? How do I know they are my least favorite if I haven't' read them. I didn't enjoy Phillip Roth or Jack Kerouac or JM Coetzee very much.

5. An author you wanted to like, but didn’t? Oscar Wilde is an author I wanted to like more. I like the plot of his books but I find the reading to be very difficult. there are probably a lot more of those classics authors that I wish I liked reading more. I would almost put Jane Austen here, but I do like her stories, I just don't love them.

  1. I haven't read anything by Maeve Binchy, although I do have one of her books in my TBR collection. My mother-in-law gave me the book as a gift a couple of years ago.

  2. I really need and want to read more Binchy. I loved the 2 books I've read so far.

Have you seen The Importance of Being Ernest with Colin Firth, Rupert Everett, and Reese Witherspoon? It's hilarious!!!! (Based on an Oscar Wilde play)

  3. Maeve Binchy is brilliant. Best one is probably Tara Road but I'd not turn down the chance to read any of them.

Importance of Being Ernest is hilarious but also loved the Knights Tale with the late, great Heath Ledger.

  4. wendycat - they are pretty light books, but so readable. Your mother-in-law is a smart woman. You will have to try one soon.

3m - No, but Colin Firth? I love him. It's funny because I thought I liked Wilde based on The Importance of Being Ernest. I read it twice in University and loved the play. I have even seen it performed, so I was most disappointed by the other two books of his I read.

laura - thanks for stopping by. Evening Class is my favorite Binchy book, and then I loved how so many of the later books connected back, especially Quentins.

  7. May I also recommend some more British Authors that might not have made the crossing? All are easy reading like Binchy and great stories.

Penny Vincenzi, especially Windfall. Very good, fast paced family stories.

Judith Lennox - beautiful writing about recent history. Her novels set around the 2nd World War are amazing.

Rosamund Pilcher - atmospheric novels very often set in the 1930s. The Shell Seekers is one of the best books I've ever read.
