BOOK: Old Filth by Jane Gardam

Old Filth by Jane Gardam, 260 pages

Orange January: Shortlist 2005

Edward Feathers, Old Filth (Failed in London, Try Hong Kong) has returned to England in his retirement days. He's a legend in legal circles, a Raj Orphan (born in the East, sent to England for a childhood), and a pretty lonely, sad guy. Gardam tells his life story in a back and forth narrative, explaining how he ended up the way he is.

Filth is so remote and reserved, that is is not until the reader nears the end, as layer upon layer of his life is revealed that the deep sympathy for Filth develops. The miracle is that he survived and thrived based on the abandonment he suffered his whole life.  Gardam writes in a very readable style, and the slow subtle details that are described make the experience a good one. She's not just stating what happened, and it's not from Filth's perspective exactly. We don't spend time in his head, we just follow him around and observe his life. There is a detached view, which is part of Filth's stiff upper lip view of life, British style.

There is a sequel, with his wife's story, The Man in the Wooden Hat.I just adore the covers of these books, and I think reading Betty's story will be a welcome addition to Old Filth's life.

Now that you mention it, I found the same thing with another of her novels, that question of a slow-build of sympathy (very slow!), which is kind of odd because I seem to remember being completely plunged into sympathy with Bilgewater and some of her short fiction. I'm going to be watching for this with her works from now on...thanks RG!

I like when I can find a pattern in authors. This is my first book by Gardam, glad to hear you've liked her other books.
I really like the covers, too. I am thinking I might try this book out.

It's the character study/British guy which can be hit or miss with me, but I liked it here.
Wow, your covers are very very different from ours. The copies I have have sort of muted colors and people in silhouette -- also cool but not as pretty as the ones you have. They've been on my TBR list for.ev.er., but I didn't love the other Jane Gardam book I read, and I've been loath to try these for that reason.

I saw those other covers on Librarything, and they don't send me the same vibe at all. I'm glad I ended up with the pretty one. If I dont' get to read the sequel with that cover, I'll be mightily disappointed.
Hi there Raidergirl3 it seems like the content of this book talks about history and can be based on real life situation. because the main character here travel around England and didn't know where he end up.
